Miscellaneous Terrarium Plants

Assorted small to medium sized plants originated from tropical rainforest--they like high humidity and filtered light. Because of this, they are perfect for use in terrariums or small containers and not outgrow the limited space.

The best form of Aglaonema pictum "Tricolor" cloned, cultivated and exported worldwide by Siamgreenculture Nurseries

Besides impressive fern and companion collection, we have been growing a number of interesting terrarium plants. Our selection are small to medium size plants originated from tropical rain forest, which perform well in high humidity and shady position. They are ideal for sealed containers such as terrarium, vivarium, as well as greenhouse subjects.

Most plants are cascading, or spreading, in habit. Although some can be grown as much larger plants, or form a bush, they will always remain small-leaved. With proper care and pruning, they can easily be grown as small as you choose.

Anthurium clidemioides
$95.00

One of the most sought-after “terrarium-friendly” anthurium species. Major populations span across the Central American Peninsular, from Costa Rica to Panama. Their remarkable-looking is a similarly low mound of heavily textured leaves, which relatively prompt response to major fluctuations in light intensity, with changes in both new leaf size and existing leaf color. Low light conditions produce larger leaves in mature plants with an almost genuine black color. These are intensely bullate when grown dark but will then change to more compact, greener leaves when exposed to higher light intensities (over 2,800 lux).

They originate from areas of high precipitation, so require high humidity; must grown under cover or terrarium type culture. Need free draining substrates and probably best when backed with a taller tree-fern plaque. They seem resentful of fluctuations on wide cultural swings. Overall, this is not a beginner plant.

Homalomena lingua-felis
$95.00

This Homalomena has been long time cultivated in our nurseries and finally turns out that it is a new species! It was added to our collection because of the distinctive foliage and its name refers to the upper leaf surface, which is covered with thick hairs, creating a texture like a cat's tongue. The name lingua-felis comes from the Latin words lingua and feles, which mean tongue and cat. These sandpaper textures are also assumed to facilitate the movement of water by forming channels, guilding water away from the leaf surface. This evolution promotes the plant to thrive in persistently wet conditions, as it was found as a lithophyt near the splash-zones of waterfalls in North Sumatra.

In cultivation this aroid does not need to grow in water or constant wet conditions. Instead, the major key to success is relatively high humidity and good air circulation environment. Higher light level (950-1,300 Lux) maintains the plant in beautiful form.
